A Passing Fancy

You are obligated to help.

Anyone who prefers life to death is obligated to render aid and succor to their fellow sentient beings. This obligation is implicit in the terms of life. Because you are living you must empower and uplift those around you.

What, then, does this mean? It simply means that the secret to life is this: help others.

So why don’t people do this? I would venture to say that this stems from the same reasons people fail to pursue a course of action they know would benefit them. I’ve found them to be:

Fear of unknown outcomes.
The question of, “How can I help someone else if I can’t even help myself?”
Being comfortable in where you are.

We are, unfortunately, limited by our evolution. Our brains crave comfort, shun the unknown and can only empathize with a limited number of people. These traits were evolved to help us survive in a world very different than the one we live in now. But, we have the unique ability to rise above our evolution.

I don’t really know how to overcome the above reasons for inaction. All I know is that because I’ve decided to continue living I must fulfill my obligation.

It’s just a matter of how.

The brain has been traditionally viewed as a deterministic machine where certain inputs give rise to certain outputs. However, there is a growing body of work that suggests this is not the case. The high importance of initial inputs suggests that the brain may be working in the realms of chaos, with small changes in initial inputs leading to the production of strange attractors. This may also be reflected in the physical structure of the brain which may also be fractal. EEG data is a good place to look for the underlying patterns of chaos in the brain since it samples many millions of neurons simultaneously. Several studies have arrived at a fractal dimension of between 5 and 8 for human EEG data. This suggests that the brain operates in a higher dimension than the 4 of traditional space-time. These extra dimensions suggest that quantum gravity may play a role in generating consciousness.

A few thoughts

While I don’t feel suicidal anymore - indeed all those nasty, negative feelings cleared up almost the instant my parents gave in and said, “okay you can quit” - I still don’t think life is really that great.

However, if I am of a mind to stay alive I might as well fulfill the obligation that I believe all thinking, sentient beings have: Helping others live the best possible life they can, and thus, uplifting the species.

Advancing the human race to a new realm of consciousness, so to speak.

I think my disenchantment with life probably stems from two things:

I’m bored
I’ve not really lived

I don’t really know what I’m going to do about those things, but now, at least, I know why I don’t see life as some fabulous fruit cake.

Thirty-Four years ago tonight, The White Night riots were sparked in San Francisco by an announcement of the lenient sentencing of Dan White, for the assassinations of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. The event took place on the eve of what would have been Harvey Milk’s 49th birthday. Earlier that day, White had been convicted of voluntary manslaughter, the lightest possible conviction for his actions.

Dan White said eating too many Twinkies caused him to murder Milk and Moscone. The court thought it was a reasonable excuse.

Several hours after the riot had been broken up, police made a retaliatory raid on a gay bar in San Francisco’s Castro District. Patrons were beaten by police in riot gear. Two dozen arrests were made during the course of the raid.

In the following days, LGBT leaders refused to apologize for the events of that night. This led to increased political power in the LGBT community.
